Andy has fished Lake Ontario since he was 16, chasing kings for the sunrises and the scream of the drag. On his boat you learn the gear he runs and which colours are working, and why they change as the morning goes on. By the last pass you'll be calling the next setup yourself.

Every trip runs on the Gone Coastal or the Kali Mae and fishes up to four. Need room for five or six? That's the Gone Coastal.

  • Cash at the boat. Full payment in US cash when you arrive. If the lake turns rough, the captain calls it and you reschedule.

Before you board

Boats leave early. Here's what to have with you at the dock.

Bring

  • A valid NY State fishing licence (get one online)
  • Lunch and drinks, no glass bottles
  • Zip bags and a cooler for your catch; the crew fillets and bags it
  • Motion sickness medication, taken before you need it
  • A camera

Wear

  • Layers for the weather, and rain gear if it's looking wet
  • Soft-soled shoes, white soles preferred
  • No work or cowboy boots
  • Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen

Leave at home

  • Hard liquor
  • Illegal drugs, which get reported to the US Coast Guard

The crew may refuse anyone who is under the influence, for everyone's safety, with no refund.

Weather & payment

  • The captain calls off trips for bad weather or seas; you reschedule
  • Full payment in US cash on arrival at the boat
  • Andy answers within 48 hours, April through September
